When Silence Is Enough

There was a moment today when I almost said something.

It was right there.

Formed, ready, sitting just behind my words.

A response I could have given.

A correction I could have made.

A way to explain myself a little more clearly.

And for a second, I planned to say it.

But something paused me.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

Just a small, quiet space between the thought and the words.

And somewhere in that space, I realized I didn't have to say anything.

That sounds like such a small thing.

Maybe it is.

But I think I have spent a lot of time believing that being misunderstood requires a response. That if I can just explain myself clearly enough, add one more piece of information, find the right words, then surely I can make things understood.

Sometimes that's true.

Sometimes speaking is exactly what is needed.

But this time, it wasn't.

So I let the moment pass.

And what surprised me was how little it cost.

I didn't walk away frustrated.

I didn't spend the rest of the day wishing I had said what I wanted to say.

Nothing terrible happened because I left a few words unspoken.

The moment simply moved on.

And so did I.

Maybe that's something I'm learning.

Not every misunderstanding needs to be corrected.

Not every thought needs somewhere to land.

Not every silence is an empty space waiting for words.

I think wisdom is sometimes knowing what to say.

And sometimes...

it's realizing you've already said enough.
