Memorial Day

Memorial Day

For many people, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer.

The grills come out.
Suitcases get packed.
Families gather for a long weekend and a day away from work.

And maybe that is part of the reason this day can feel so complicated for some families.

Because beneath the sales flyers, vacations, and backyard celebrations…
there are still folded flags resting in living rooms.
Names carved into stone.
Photographs that have started to yellow at the edges from being held too many times.

There are mothers who never stopped missing their sons.
Wives who built entire lives around an empty place at the table.
Children who grew up on stories instead of memories.

There are still old POW/MIA bracelets tucked carefully into jewelry boxes and dresser drawers.
Still people who pause when they pass a memorial wall, searching quietly for a familiar name.

Some gave years of their lives in service.
Some gave everything.

And Memorial Day was always meant to remember that cost.

Not only the lives that were lost…
but the birthdays never celebrated,
the dreams that never had the chance to unfold,
the ordinary futures that disappeared in places far from home.

Maybe that is why this day has always felt quieter to me.

Not hopeless.
Not bitter.

Just reverent.

Because somewhere across this country, there are Gold Star families who still carry the weight of what should have been.

And remembrance matters.

Even now.
