Twelve Honest Lessons from the Mother of James and John

Some prayers are very honest.

They come from places of deep love and hope, even when we do not yet fully understand what we are asking.

The mother of James and John appears in the Gospel of Matthew with such a prayer.

She approaches Jesus with her two sons beside her and kneels before Him.

Then she makes a bold request.

“Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
- Matthew 20:21

It is a very human moment.

A mother who believes in Jesus.
A mother who believes in her sons.
A mother who hopes their future will be full of honor.

But Jesus gently answers with a deeper question.

“Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”
- Matthew 20:22

They answer confidently that they can.

Jesus tells them they will indeed share in His suffering, but the places of honor in His kingdom are not given the way people expect.

In that moment, Jesus begins teaching something important about the nature of greatness.

Here are twelve lessons we can learn from the mother of James and John.

1. Love Often Speaks Boldly

Her request came from love for her sons.

Love sometimes gives us courage to speak.

2. Parents Naturally Desire the Best for Their Children

She wanted her sons to have places of honor.

Every loving parent hopes for a bright future for their children.

3. Faith Sometimes Begins with Imperfect Understanding

She believed in Jesus, even if she misunderstood the kind of kingdom He was building.

Faith grows as we learn.

4. Jesus Welcomes Honest Questions

She approached Jesus directly.

He did not turn her away.

5. God’s Kingdom Is Different from Earthly Power

Jesus was teaching about humility, not status.

True greatness looks different in His kingdom.

6. Following Christ Includes Sacrifice

Jesus spoke of “the cup” they would drink.

Faith sometimes leads through difficult roads.

7. Ambition Can Be Redirected

Her desire for honor became an opportunity for Jesus to teach about service.

8. Humility Is the Path to Greatness

Jesus later told His disciples:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
- Matthew 20:26

9. Parents Do Not Control Their Children’s Calling

James would later become the first apostle martyred.

John would live a long life of ministry and exile.

Their paths were not what their mother imagined.

10. God Sees the Heart Behind Our Requests

Her request was bold, but it came from love.

God understands the hopes we carry for those we love.

11. Faith Continues Even After We Are Corrected

Jesus gently redirected her thinking.

Correction is often part of spiritual growth.

12. Greatness in God’s Kingdom Is Service

The story ends with Jesus teaching that the greatest among His followers must become servants of all.

Closing Reflection

I imagine this moment from a mother’s heart.

Standing beside two sons she had raised.

Watching them follow a teacher who spoke about a coming kingdom.

Wondering what their future might hold.

Her request was bold.

Perhaps even a little misguided.

But it came from a place many of us understand - the hope that those we love will find a place of honor and purpose.

Jesus did not reject her.

Instead, He showed her something deeper.

In His kingdom, greatness is not about sitting in the highest place.

It is about serving faithfully wherever we are called.

Seek greatness through service today.
