Twelve Faithful Lessons from Mary Magdalene
Twelve Faithful Lessons from Mary Magdalene
Notes from Eden
Some names in scripture carry stories that have grown over time.
Mary Magdalene is one of them.
For many centuries she was often described as a former prostitute. Yet the Bible itself never says this. That idea likely came from a blending of several different women mentioned in the Gospels.
What scripture actually tells us is this:
“Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out.”
-Luke 8:2
She was a woman whose life had been deeply changed by Jesus.
And after that moment, she became one of His most faithful followers.
Mary Magdalene appears again and again near the center of the Gospel story - learning, supporting, witnessing, and remaining when many others fled.
Whether we see her as a woman healed, a devoted disciple, or perhaps even a thoughtful student of Christ’s teachings, her story still carries powerful lessons.
Here are twelve of them.
1. Healing Can Begin a New Life
Mary Magdalene’s story begins with restoration.
Jesus freed her from suffering, and her life took a new direction.
Sometimes grace becomes the beginning of everything.
2. Gratitude Creates Devotion
After her healing, Mary did not return to her old life.
She followed Jesus and supported His ministry.
Gratitude often leads to commitment.
3. Women Were Part of Jesus’ Ministry
Luke tells us that several women traveled with Jesus and helped support the work.
Mary Magdalene was among them.
Faithful women have always helped carry the story forward.
4. Learning Is Part of Discipleship
Some early Christian writings and traditions portray Mary Magdalene as someone who understood Jesus’ teachings deeply.
Whether through scholarship or simple devotion, she clearly listened closely.
Faith grows when we keep learning.
5. Courage Stays When Others Leave
When Jesus was crucified, many disciples fled in fear.
Mary Magdalene remained near the cross.
True devotion often appears in the hardest moments.
6. Love Shows Up in Grief
Mary Magdalene returned to the tomb early in the morning.
Her heart was still searching for the one she loved and followed.
Faith sometimes walks through grief before it finds hope again.
7. The First Witness of Resurrection
One of the most remarkable moments in scripture is this:
The first person to see the risen Christ was Mary Magdalene.
“Mary!”
-John 20:16
Her name spoken by the Savior.
8. God Entrusts Important Messages to Faithful People
Jesus gave Mary Magdalene a message for the disciples:
“Go to my brothers and tell them…”
-John 20:17
She became the first witness of the resurrection.
9. Faith Can Grow from Transformation
Mary’s story reminds us that our past does not define our future.
Transformation is one of the most beautiful parts of faith.
10. Devotion Is Stronger Than Fear
While others hid behind closed doors, Mary went to the tomb.
Her love carried her through uncertainty.
11. Jesus Knows Our Names
When Mary recognized the risen Christ, it was because He spoke her name.
Faith often becomes personal in that moment when we realize we are known.
12. The Story Continues Through Those Who Witness
Mary Magdalene carried the news of the resurrection to others.
Her voice became part of the greatest message ever told.
Closing Reflection
I like to imagine Mary Magdalene standing in the garden that morning.
The air cool with early light.
The stone rolled away.
Her heart still heavy with grief.
And then she hears a single word spoken behind her.
“Mary.”
Sometimes the most powerful moment in faith is when we realize the Savior knows us personally.
Mary Magdalene reminds us that the story of redemption often begins with that simple recognition.
Listen for the voice that calls your name.
